Reinstating the Expanded Child Tax Credit will continue to help lift millions out of poverty and alleviate hardship.
Act now to restore this transformative policy permanently.
The Expanded Child Tax Credit, a key provision of the American Rescue Plan (COVID-19 relief legislation), provided direct monthly payments to working families from July 2021 to December 2021. The Expanded Child Tax Credit lowered child poverty rates, and decreased food insecurity and financial anxiety for millions of Americans. The Expanded Child Tax Credit also allowed over 27 million more children from families who earned less than the threshold wage to benefit. In line with ECS' lead advocacy issue of racial equity, it is important to note that 40% of the new beneficiaries came from Black and Latinx households.* Within the span of just one year, the United States had a 46% reduction in child poverty,* credited largely to this significant legislative effort!
At the end of 2021, Congress allowed the credit to lapse and benefits ended in January 2022, plunging millions of children back into poverty and recreating the very instability their families battled before. One of ECS' lead advocacy issues is to eliminate benefits cliffs for low-income families. With the expanded tax credit lapse, millions of families were thrown off a benefits cliff back into poverty.
In response, ECS, alongside many advocacy organizations including the NAACP, the National Urban League and Unidos, believes that reinstatement is an act of economic and racial justice that makes immediate positive impact on working families and the communities we serve.
Contact your U.S. Senators and tell them to reinstate the Expanded Child Tax Credit!
